I switched teams (just for a day) and became a theater critic on the NYC cable show “Two On The Aisle.” In the video I join Charles Gross and Leslie (Hoban) Blake to review GHOST: THE MUSICAL and LEAP OF FAITH. Through the magic of television I disappear at the halfway point, but ’til then, we bring the snark:
Could you tell I’m not much for musicals? Might be a drawback for a full-time critic. Still, it was an education to see 2 shows that lots o’ people gladly paid $100+ to watch. It was also a reminder: themes and plots and clever dialogue are fine, but the playwright’s first job is to ENTERTAIN.
I’ll be teaching a playwriting workshop at Stage West in Fort Worth on January 7 along with my friend and fellow playwright Kevin Kautzman. Kevin’s play COYOTE will be running in Dallas through February 11. Workshop includes a ticket to that night’s Stage West play, David Ives’ NEW JERUSALEM. Join us if you dare. Details are here.
Stage West Theatre in Fort Worth has announced that my play THE SPORTS PAGE will be part of their 33rd season. I got the exciting news in an email from the director, Jerry Russell. The world premiere of THE SPORTS PAGE will take place February 9-March 18, 2012. Their season also includes Stoppard, Shaw, Orton and David Ives. As my grandfather used to say, I’m stepping in some high cotton. Want to go behind the scenes of a world premiere from the playwright’s point of view? Check out my new blog at www.sportspageplay.com and come along for the ride.
